Fighting Food Waste one rice pack at a time

One of our values at GreenJinn is caring for our community. That includes our GreenJinn community (that’s you guys, our app users), our team but also those around us.

You may have read some of our sustainability initiatives about zero-food waste and ways to reduce your waste at home. This is an issue very important to us and hopefully by sharing tips we can all do at home, we can all make small changes that will make such a difference. However we knew we wanted to do more.

Everyone should have access to healthy, nutritious food.

Millions of people in UK right now, don’t even get that choice to eat healthily or have food spare to throw away. Millions, yes you read that right, millions of people in the UK regularly experience hunger.

Yet we waste enough food each year in the UK to fill 195 Royal Albert Halls. 1/3 of all food waste happens at home. 1/3 of food waste is actually edible.

We have partnered with the amazing guys at The Felix Project to help fight food waste and food poverty. The Felix Project collect fresh, nutritious food that cannot be sold. They deliver this surplus food to charities and schools so they can provide healthy meals and help the most vulnerable.

With the rest of Team GreenJinn in the UK, we swapped our desks and laptops for hair nets and aprons ready to help in the kitchen. We decanted rice from many many many many packs, we packed lots of meals and did a deep clean of the kitchen to wrap up.

We really got into the groove with our production line!

We are very proud to say we helped pack 2888 meals that day! The meals were all super nutritious, fresh (sent out that day!) and smelt delicious.

It definitely got us hungry!

Doing the right thing is part of our Green value and in our DNA. We know we can do more but we can’t wait to work further with The Felix Project and tackle food waste.  We will be back soon!

We have some other ideas of ways to help contribute to the amazing work at the Felix Project so stay tuned for more!
